A Independence High School teacher is no longer in his classroom after allegations he showed his students inappropriate photos.
According to documentation from Williamson County Schools, teacher Keith Steffens found himself suspended on Feb. 6. Superintendent Mike Looney issued the suspension without pay.
“The suspension will be in effect until the completion of an investigation into allegations you violated Board Policy 5.404 and the Acceptable Use Agreement for 5.404p and engaged in inappropriate behavior including but not limited to showing a picture of a female with her breast exposed to one of your classes.”
The next day, Steffens retired from the district after 12 years. He taught at various high schools – Independence, Brentwood, Ravenwood and Summit. He floated throughout the district as an instructor for computer architecture. Some schools didn’t have a full six classes for the course, causing him to split his time.
A review of his personnel file shows this is the only time Steffens has had any disciplinary issue with the district.
District officials can no longer investigate the issue because Steffens resigned. However, the district did notify the state that he resigned during an investigation, which will be flagged on his license. The incident was also reported to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.
