2019 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Independence High School, Robert Hassell

After a masterful season on the mound and at bat and a number of impressive accolades, Independence High School rising senior Robert Hassell is our 2019 Male Athlete of the Year for the school.

Hassell was named 11-AAA’s MVP for the regular season and helped lead Independence to the state baseball tournament. The team won the district tournament behind a 17-strikeout no hitter from Hassell before falling to Summit in the regions.

“He was unbelievable,” Eagles head coach Mike McLaury said after the district win. “Today he struck out 17 on 100 pitches. That’s pretty darn good.”

Hassell was also named the Gatorade Tennessee Baseball Player of the Year and won the county’s WillCo Award for Baseball Player of the Year. He was also a finalist for Class AAA’s 2018-19 Mr. Baseball award.

He is committed to Vanderbilt University for his college career and will return to Indy this fall to begin training for his senior season.
