The Tennessee AFL-CIO Labor Council has announced their endorsement of Justin Kanew, Democratic nominee for Congress in Tennessee’s Seventh District.

Kanew is facing Mark Green, a state senator and physician.

The endorsement announcement came August 27 from the Executive Board of the organization and said, in part, “We believe you will be a strong voice for Tennessee working families in Washington, DC.”

“I’ve always been proud of my union membership, and the support of the AFL-CIO is especially important to me,” Kanew said in a press release acknowledging the endorsement. “They understand my commitment to the families of Middle and West Tennessee, and together we’ll work towards a goal of jobs that pay a fair, living wage.”

Kanew is a member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), a trade union dating to 1912 that represents thousands of American writers.

“Unions and the middle class go hand in hand. My union has helped me make a living to support my family,” Kanew said. “Unions not only provide jobs, but also train our young people and put them on paths to support their own families. When we stand together, and labor participation is strong, everyone benefits.”

Formed in 1955, the AFL-CIO is the largest federation of unions in the U.S., comprised of 56 national and international trade organizations and representing more than 12 million Americans

Kanew has also been endorsed by Indivisible, a non-partisan national grassroots organization supporting Congressional change; as well as Mom’s Demand Action and Women’s March Tennessee.
