Belmont’s Rick Byrd and Lipscomb’s Casey Alexander, a Brentwood Academy alum, are among the 25 finalists for the 2019 Skip Prosser Man of the Year award.
The honor is presented annually to a college basketball coach who achieves success on the court and displays moral integrity off of it.
Byrd is a finalist for the fourth time. He also was considered in 2008, 2011 and 2013. This season his team won its fifth Ohio Valley Conference title in seven years and he earned his 800th win as a college head coach. In 2012, Byrd received the NCAA Bob Frederick Award for his lifelong commitment to sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play.
Alexander played and coach under Byrd at Belmont and is in his sixth season at Lipscomb. He has led the Bisons to 20-plus wins in three straight years, to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 and to a conference championship this season.
CollegeInsider.com revealed the finalists Tuesday. The list includes Purdue’s Matt Painer, Kansas State’s Bruce Weber, Harvard’s Tommy Amaker, East Tennessee State’s Steve Forbes and Murray State’s Matt McMahon.
The winner will be announced April. 5.
