During a trip to Columbus, Ohio, Brian and Erin Welch ate at Whit’s Frozen Custard each day in the four-day weekend.
“I’m an ice cream junkie and I have been for my entire life,” said Erin.
The couple moved to Williamson County in 2014, after working corporate jobs for four years in Columbus.
The Ohio-based chain became their favorite dessert stop during their time in the state, where they relocated from their hometown of Chattanooga.
When they moved to Spring Hill, they simply wanted their three daughters to adjust to the school system.
But soon after the visit to Ohio, they decided to bring back their beloved Midwestern treat, opening a shop in Nashville and one in Franklin.
Though the Nashville location shuttered, the Berry Farms location has flourished, becoming a gathering spot for young and old in the neighborhood.
Now, the Welches have added to the appeal by expanding with a lunch menu last week.
After opening in 2016, the Welches wanted to focus on the top-billed item, but knew they had the capability to serve food like most of the Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida locations, which serve hot dogs and pulled pork sandwiches.
The couple wanted a more classic menu, so they serve soup, like broccoli cheddar, and sandwiches, like buffalo, barbecue, and club chicken, and a pimento grilled cheese.
So far, the most popular is the buffalo chicken, served on a Mexican telera roll. They also have gluten-free bread.
As business slows gradually in the winter, the couple hopes lunch will draw more customers back in.
With Mexican, Italian, Japanese and Chinese eateries, “we thought it was a great addition to the neighborhood,” Welch said.
