Battle Ground Academy head football coach Roc Batten, fresh off a Class AA state runner up season, will be returning to where he spent an early portion of his coaching career.
Monday, Ensworth High School announced Batten as its new football coach and associate director of admissions.
“I am honored to have this opportunity to rejoin the Ensworth community,” Batten said in a release from the school.
“I spent several years at Ensworth earlier in my coaching career, and it just felt like the right time to return. Ensworth is an exceptional school with great leadership, academic programs, and facilities, as well as talented faculty and students. I am looking forward to leading the Tiger football program and am excited for the upcoming season.”
A former Vanderbilt Commodore, Batten spent six years at Ensworth and was a defensive coordinator on their 2005 state title team, the school’s first.
“Coach Batten was a great asset to our staff when we were building the foundations of Ensworth’s high school, and we are honored to welcome him back as our Head Football Coach,” former Ensworth football coach and current athletic director Ricky Bowers said in the release of the hire.
He went to BGA in 2011 to lead its football program and led them to a state title berth in 2014 and 2018.
“Roc is more than a coach; he is a leader who will have a positive impact on Ensworth both on and off the field,” Ensworth Head of School David Braemer said in the release. “Roc took his experience coaching on the staffs of championship teams at both MBA and Ensworth and built a strong, inclusive, winning, fifth through twelfth-grade football program at BGA. I have no doubt that he will be able to do the same in returning to Ensworth, given his familiarity with our school and match with our Mission.”
BGA will now be looking for its next football coach.
Wildcats offensive standout Briston Bennett, who is fielding college offers, shared his well wishes to Batten on Twitter at the time of the announcement.
“I can’t explain how thankful I am of this man! He’s the main reason I’m at BGA today,” he said. “Even though I’m losing you, I’ll never forget the sacrifices and the great times we’ve had these past 3 years. I love you and wish you the best on your next journey.”
