The Brentwood-based addiction treatment company Spero Health will open its first clinic in Middle Tennessee next month.
Spero already operates 23 addiction treatment centers across several states, but this will be the first clinic in Tennessee. The clinic will start seeing patients on May 1, and the company is currently accepting appointments.
The company says it plans to open a network of clinics throughout Tennessee in 2019.
The new clinic is enrolled with TennCare and will accept Medicaid and commercial insurance plans.
The Tennessee Department of Health recently reported 1,776 people died from drug overdoses in 2017. Opioids were present in more than 70 percent of those deaths.
Using a calculation from the Centers for Disease Control, Spero estimated that means more than 1 million Tennesseans — or about one in six people in Tennessee — are struggling with addiction.
Dr. Medhat Kalliny will be the medical director and lead physician of the clinic in Smyrna.
