BrentWord Communications, parent of four online daily newspapers across Williamson County, will host a July 17 public debate for local candidates for the State House of Representatives.

The debate will be at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at the Williamson County Administrative Complex, located at 1320 W. Main Street in Franklin. It is free and open to the public.

Six candidates are running in Williamson County – incumbent Charles Sargent and Steve Gawrys in District 61; incumbent Glen Casada and Cherie Hammond in District 63; and incumbent Jeremy Durham and Bill Peach in District 65.

Former Williamson A.M.editor Mark Cook will again moderate as he did for BrentWord Communications’ county GOP primary candidate forum in April. BWC publishes the Brentwood, Franklin, Nolensville and Spring Hill daily online newspapers.

Candidates will have the opportunity to make opening and closing statements in order by district.

They will be asked a series of questions generated by a local media panel including BrentWord Communications and each will have 90 seconds to answer each question, and his or her opponent will be able to rebut.

Candidates to confirm they will participate thus far are Casada and Hammond (District 63), as well as Durham and Peach, a Democrat (District 65). Gawrys (District 61) declined an invitation, and Sargent has not yet confirmed his attendance.

State House candidates, except for Peach, will appear on the ballot for the state Republican primary election on Aug. 7. Peach will run in the state general election on Nov. 4.

Early voting for the Republican primary runs July 18-Aug. 2. The deadline for voter registration is July 8.
