FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Brentwood/Indy, Franklin/Centennial, CPA/Lipscomb on horizon

FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Brentwood/Indy, Franklin/Centennial, CPA/Lipscomb on horizon

We’re entering a major week here in Williamson County football.

No matter how you slice it, the week’s game slate will have major ramifications for the rest of the year, and features some of the bigger 2019 matchups this side of the goal post.

Our Game of the Week will find the undefeated Summit Spartans defending their field against the Page Patriots, reigning 5-5A champions.

Whoever wins that could be in the driver’s seat to take the region as a whole.

Notwithstanding that clash of the titans, the rest of the week’s slate promises to be just as exciting.

Brentwood, Indy meet again after 2018 melees

Region 6-6A is always good for some drama.

Look no further than Brentwood and Independence going back-and-forth last season.

The Eagles shook off a slow 2018 start to upset a then-red-hot Brentwood at home, and the Bruins paid them back in the second round of the playoffs in a close contest.

Expect any game where Eagles and Bruins clash to be close, with Friday’s meeting at Independence High School sure to be no different.

Both quarterbacks, Brentwood’s Cade Granzow and Indy’s Ethan Cash, are playing fantastic football this season, and both teams are supported by stout defenses and no shortage of offensive talent.

Indy is on a five-game win streak, and Brentwood topped its big rival Ravenwood and is fresh off taking down reigning D-II AA state winner CPA.

We’re looking at a great matchup between these two teams, with obvious region ramifications.

If Independence wins this, all they’d have to do is keep their record in order and beat Ravenwood to win the whole thing.

If Brentwood wins this, they could be in the fast lane to repeat.

‘Battle of Franklin’ for Franklin, Centennial on way

One of the county’s big rivalry games annually is the Battle of Franklin, where Franklin and Centennial duke it out to see who wins the city.

The 3-3 Cougars look to be the favorites in this one, but don’t sleep on the Rebels, who dismantled McGavock last week.

Franklin seems to be a better team with Joshua Nichols under center and Guy Lipscomb the feature of the offensive game plan elsewhere, and Centennial is always best when it’s learning on stellar running back Desmond Smith.

The winner of this game will have the clear advantage for the fourth playoff spot out of Region 6-6A.

Franklin still has time to make up for its down year, but it’ll have to start against the Cougars at their place.

Centennial has a great chance to use this game to help get them back into the playoffs.

CPA, Lipscomb will be a 2019 game to remember

In what’s always been a fierce rivalry, the annual Christ Presbyterian Academy and Lipscomb Academy game only becomes more interesting with the Mustangs’ resurgence under Trent Dilfer.

The team has a lone loss to PJPII under its belt, and CPA is sitting at a tough 1-5.

But don’t let that record fool you. The Lions have been exponentially better the last two weeks, with a shutout of BGA and close road contest with Brentwood to show for it.

The Dilfer Mustangs haven’t quite had a road environment like CPA has, and they’ve not quite faced a coach like Ingle Martin.

It’s going to be fascinating to see how this one goes.

It could be another statement win for the Mustangs in Dilfer’s first season, or it could be a reminder that you never count out CPA.

BA on ESPN2 this week

The Brentwood Academy Eagles will travel to Knoxville Catholic Friday for a contest between two of the best private schools in the state, and those who are curious can catch the game on ESPN2.

It’ll be pat of the 2019 ESPN Geico High School Football Showcase, per Knoxville’s ABC 6 WATE.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT.

The rest of the slate…Nolensville hosts Tullahoma…FRA travels to Goodpasture…Fairview welcomes Camden…GCA heads to Friendship Christian…Ravenwood faces Dickson Co. on the road…Spring Hill travels to Maplewood…BGA has its bye week.

Five Games to Check Out:

  • Brentwood/Indy will be a great one, with the Eagles fan base always good to travel.
  • CPA/Lipscomb will be a fun atmosphere at the Lions Den, with Lipscomb fans on the short trip down Hillsboro.
  • Summit/Page, of course, will be exciting. Look for the Spartans faithful to pack the place.
  • The Battle of Franklin at Centennial will be a must for anyone wanting to see who gets Franklin bragging rights.
  • The Fairview Yellow Jackets are 4-2 and are building on another good season, if you’re wanting something away from the usual talk of the town.
