Pro-life Democrat joins race for chairman of state party

By Stephen Elliott

Christopher Hale, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress earlier this year, has thrown his hat in the ring for chair of the Tennessee Democratic Party.

Hale is up against current chair Mary Mancini, who is running for re-election to the post, and Holly McCall, the chair of the Williamson County Democratic Party.

“There are those who say that the Democratic Party in Tennessee can never win again,” Hale said in a video announcing his bid. “I disagree.”

Retiring House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh, who ran unsuccessfully for governor and was considering a run for party chair, told The Tennessean he would not be a candidate.

Running in the Democratic primary for the 4th Congressional District earlier this year, Hale came up short to Mariah Phillips, who ultimately lost to incumbent Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais in the general election.

Hale, who is pro-life, worked in the Obama administration on Catholic outreach.
