Ravenwood taps longtime assistant Andrew James as girls basketball head coach

Ravenwood High School stayed in-house to find its new girls basketball coach.

The school announced Friday evening that Andrew James, an assistant coach with the boys team for the last eight years and a previous girls assistant coach, had been promoted to head coach of the girls basketball team.

He replaces former Lady Raptors head coach Mariska Harris, our WillCo Girls Basketball Coach of the Year, who stepped down from the role in March.

“We are excited to announce Andrew James as our new Girls Basketball Coach,” Ravenwood athletic director Andrew Elrod said in a release.

“We think that Coach James can build upon the success and momentum that Coach Harris has built over the past few years in our Girls program and keep our girls playing at the Championship caliber of ball that Ravenwood basketball has been accustomed to playing.”

He also teaches history at Ravenwood and has for seven years.

The Ravenwood boys made it to the regional tournament in February after securing one of the top four spots in 11-AAA with James assisting Raptors head coach Patrick Whitlock.

The Lady Raptors were runners-up in Region 6-6A and made it to the substate round of the playoffs.

They’ll be returning standouts Jaz Harmon and Lexi Erickson next season.
