Six-months of special focus on seat belts starts Thursday

WILLIAMSON COUNTY SHERIFF

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) for its fifth annual Seat belts Are For Everyone (SAFE) campaign.

This year’s campaign follows a slight decline in the use of seat belts between 2016 and 2017.

The statewide Seat belts Are For Everyone initiative is designed to increase the use of seat belts and child passenger safety restraints. The SAFE campaign begins Feb. 1, 2018, and concludes August 1, 2018.

The WCSO and other participating agencies will focus special attention to seat belt enforcement at night because the number of traffic fatalities without the use of seat belts is generally highest at night.

Tennessee’s average seat belt usage rate was 88.95 percent in 2016 according to the THSO.  Last year, the state’s usage rate decreased to 88.51 percent. The goal this year is to achieve 100 percent seat belt usage across Tennessee through the SAFE campaign and other initiatives.
