Independence High School – Juan Lopez

Senior Juan Lopez has been quietly racking up the awards for news and filmmaking his entire high school career.

“Juan is a great student to have in class,” Matt Balzer, Indy broadcast teacher, said. “He has been in the film/TV program at IHS for three years. Already an accomplished filmmaker at a young age, he is constantly working to improve his craft.

“As a junior he won a NATAS award for best animation (student Emmy award) for the mid-south of the U.S. This year he placed three different videos in the Tennessee High School Press Association awards with him as the main creative force behind the nominations. He was also an integral part of our news team which placed two broadcasts in the awards. Juan has received a scholarship to attend Watkins Film School in the fall.”

Lopez is passionate about filmmaking, and he loves sharing what he creates.

His role model is Balzer. According to Lopez, Balzer is “fun, loves what he’s doing and he pushes us to improve our skills.”

Lopez will likely go to Watkins Film School to study all facets of filmmaking.

His family includes a younger brother and parents, Teresa Santiago and Rolando Lopez.
