The clothing retail store Rue21, located in The Crossings Shopping District in Spring Hill, has announced its plans to permanently close in January of next year.
Rue21 staff were unable to comment on the reason for the announcement.
This will be the third business in The Crossings Shopping District to announce its closure within the last 30 days, with both Bed Bath & Beyond and O’Charley’s Restaurant announcing their respective closures in November.
While no official reason has been given for the Rue21’s closure, staff at Bed Bath & Beyond had said one reason for their own closing was that the lease was “going up.”
According to Spring Hill Economic Development Coordinator Kayce Williams, the leasing agent for the property has already seen expressed interest from new potential businesses.
“[The leasing agent] encouraged me by saying that our market was still very strong, and there were several interested parties in the spaces that we might see become available,” Williams said. “I shared with him some of the types of things that our citizens have shared with me that they were interested in having here, and he was very understanding of that, and said that he would take that into consideration.”
Williams went on to say that while a spike in rent costs could be a possible reason for the recent closures, the cyclical nature of shopping districts in general can often lead to such sporadic closings.
After nearly 10 years of operation, Rue21 will continue to stay open until an as-of-yet unknown date in January, with sales on most items in the store.
