Senior Sydney Peay, daughter of John and Rave Peay, is a honor student and award-winning artist.
Her activities include the Gay-Straight Alliance, National Art Honor’s Society and GLSEN. She is a Haslam Scholar, 2017 Cohort, and won Best in Show at the school art show.
Her role model is Page Regan, an inspiring program coordinator for the Oasis Center in Nashville. Peay said that she tries to go and see Regan whenever she can. Regan is a former educator from Denver, Colorado who identifies as transgender and queer.
“I spend as much time as I can [there], but my parents won’t let me drive on the interstate,” she said, laughing.
She’s one of just a handful of students in the state to be a Haslam Scholar. One of the big things she’s looking forward to is heading to Scotland her sophomore year as part of the program.
She said she plans on majoring in Sociology, however, she is open to other options as they arrive. She said she knows college is about experience and is excited for all the possibilities.
