Though they squared off in high school baseball in the past, former Summit pitcher Chris McElvain and rising Independence senior and designated hitter Robert Hassell will find themselves teammates one day with Vanderbilt.
For now, they’ll share spots on the American Baseball Coaches Association’s and Rawlings’ 2019 High School All-American teams.
McElvain earned a place on the All-American First Team, one of three pitchers in the country to receive the honor.
He and Summit claimed a region title before making it to the 2019 state tournament.
As for Hassell, the 2019 Gatorade Tennessee Baseball Player of the Year, he got a spot on the second team, the only player at his position to do so.
Indy captured the 11-AAA district title before making the state tourney.
They were two of five Tennessee athletes on the All-American three-team list.
Memphis University School outfielder Maurice Hampton made the second team with Hassell, and Farragut infielder Parker Noland and pitcher Ryan Hagenow earned their accolades on the third team.
Both McElvain and Hassell made the one of the ABCA/Rawlings HS All-Region Teams as well.
McElvain will head to Vandy this fall, and could find himself ABCA/Rawlings’ Pitcher of the Year.
Hassell returns to Indy this fall for his senior year.
