Two-week MASH program gives students insight into health care careers

Twenty-nine area high school students from Lewis, Lawrence, Marshall, Maury, and Williamson counties recently completed a two-week program at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) that provided them with insight about careers in health care.

The medical center and the Maury Regional Auxiliary hosted the 2019 Maury Academy for Students in Health (MASH) program June 10–21. MASH is an annual program for high school juniors and seniors interested in health care careers to gain hands-on learning experience and exposure to a variety of medical professions and specialties. During MASH, students visit numerous departments and participate in an emergency training exercise with physicians and staff members.

“The goal of the MASH program is for students interested in health care to have fun while learning,” said Cindy Short, coordinator of MASH and assistant director of Volunteer Services at MRMC. “This program helps them find their passion and focus on what they want to do for the rest of their lives. We currently have five former MASH students who are now employees of Maury Regional Health and that, to me, is exciting to know we helped them on their journey.”

Graduates of the 2019 MASH program are Chanley Baker, Emma Beach, Caitlin Bennett, Presley Burk, Cyleigh Dobbs, Tamiya Ellis, Rachel England, Brinly Gray, Phoebe Hurt, Victoria Karkau, Kathryn Kennedy, Ilonna Kirkland, Ki’Ara Knott, Landon Kurtz, Anthony Legarrea, Journey Mitchell, Ginger Morrow, MacKenzie Niedergeses, Makayla Ogilvie, Morgan Parker, Turner Perry, Madison Porter, Avery Potts, Katherine Primm, Connor Robinson, Kurtis Stechyn, Sarah Thomas, Katherine Thompson and Molly Whitehead.
