U.S. Rep. Mark Green introduced a new bill Thursday that would give American taxpayers the option to donate $3 towards the funding of a border wall on the U.S. southern border on their annual IRS 1040 tax filing form.

The option would replace a previous option on the 1040 that allowed taxpayers to donate $3 towards the presidential campaign of their choosing.

“Taxpayer dollars should never be used to advance political campaigns,” Green said in a statement. “But, keeping Americans safe must be our number one priority. Americans spoke loud and clear in the 2016 election that we want a wall to secure our southern border. Congress has clearly been unable to get the job done. My bill will give every American the opportunity to directly help President Trump build the wall.”

Named the “Dollars for the Wall Act,” the bill’s goal would be to help fund the border wall that had been a staple of President Donald Trump’s campaign in 2016. After numerous failed attempts by the Trump administration to secure adequate border funding with a Democratic-controlled Congress, attempts to fund the wall have even seen some grass roots efforts, with a crowdfunding page on the website GoFundMe raising more than $25 million toward the construction of a border wall.

Previous attempts to secure funding for the border wall include a failed executive order in January of 2017, the single-longest government shutdown in United States’ history in late 2018 after Congress failed to approve a budget that included $5.6 billion for a border wall, as well as the declaration of a National Emergency in February 2019.

Despite having 22 co-sponsors of the bill during its introduction, the Democratic-controlled Senate and House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi would most likely be unwilling to see such a bill approved.
