The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office says a recent scam was reported involving a man posing as a WCSO deputy.
According to a release from WCSO’s Sharon Puckett, the scammer tried to solicit and/or pressure victims into photographing themselves and sending explicit or inappropriate images by texting or using a social app.
The man also attempted to defraud victims by asking for money to dismiss non-existent criminal cases, according to Puckett.
“This scammer uses fear tactics alleging that there is an active criminal investigation,” the release read. “We want to make everyone aware that this man is a scammer, not a deputy and he is not affiliated in any way with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office in Franklin, Tenn.”
The release says that deputies or detectives from a law enforcement agency will not likely contact you via cellphone apps or text messaging.
If you are contacted by someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer and are not sure of who they are please contact the WCSO non-emergency number at (615)790-5550 or your local police department.
