Women Build project set for April 11, kickoff event is March 2

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF WILLIAMSON-MAURY

Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury (HFHWM) will raise the walls on its tenth annual Women Build home on April 11, 2019 in Fairview, and seeks volunteers interested in constructing it.

Thanks to the support of the Drury Plaza Hotel, HFHWM will host a free, informational kickoff event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, and invites anyone wanting to learn more about participating on the project to attend.

WOMEN BUILD“The Women Build provides a fantastic opportunity for women to learn construction skills in a supportive environment while helping create a stable, safe home for a family,” says HFHWM Construction Site Manager Tasha Towry. “If you have ever wanted to be part of a Habitat build, this is a great place to start, and it is even more fun if you build with a friend or family member. The atmosphere is collaborative and welcoming, and you are sure to walk away with new friends.”

It’s important to note that the Women Build does not exclude men, but rather includes women in the construction process, offering an empowering, fun, and positive environment for women to give back in their communities.  Anyone age 16 and older is welcome and no experience is necessary. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction staff along with crew leaders and future Habitat homeowners.

This year volunteers will build a home alongside future homeowner and single mother Maria Herrera. Maria works two jobs while caring for her 72-year-old mother Estella and her son Abraham.  She is overwhelmed with gratitude, often to the point of tears.

“We are so thankful for this opportunity to build and buy a place to call home,” she says. “It is a godsend to have the community gather together to help our family. My hope is that my home will extend beyond just blessing my family, but allow me to better serve others as well.”

The full home sponsorship is $70,000 for the cost of “bricks and sticks” to build the home, covering everything from the foundation to the kitchen sink. Each participant has a fundraising goal of $250 to go toward the cost of the house and a volunteer goal of at least 1 build day. To help participants, a toolkit is provided with ideas and step-by-step instructions on how to raise the funds. Construction happens each weekend over a 10-week period, and no  experience in construction or fundraising is required.
